What is EAS Technology?

EAS stands for Electronic Article Surveillance and is a popular type of security protocol in retail outfits. These systems use electromagnetic waves to identify the movement of articles in and out of a facility. There are two major components of these systems, namely – EAS Tags, and EAS Security Gate. The tags attach to items and have two modes, activated or deactivated. The gates are responsible for maintaining a field of influence and detecting any activated tag inside that field.

There are three types of tags, operating on a slightly different principle. Based on this, you can select from tag types that use: Electro-Magnetic, Acousto-Magnetic, and Radio Frequencies. RF tags operate pretty much the same way as an RFID tag. The other two work by interacting with the interrogation field of the EAS security gate. Another difference between the two is – EM tags need to be demagnetized to deactivate, while AM tags need to be magnetized to deactivate.

Types of EAS Tag Detachers

These tags use magnets to form a secure lock, that prevents anyone from opening it without proper equipment. There are two types of tag detachers available in the market, namely – Manual & Electronic.

Both use magnets to open the locks on the tags, however, the difference between the two is the type of magnets they use. Manual detachers use permanent magnets and manual strength to slowly bring the magnet close to the lock to deactivate it. On the other hand, electronic detachers use a powerful electromagnet to pull open the locking pin inside the tags.

Manual locks are far cheaper than electronic ones and do not require any electricity to run. However, they are also slower to use than electronic detachers.


EAS systems provide excellent security against theft and stock shrinkage, at an affordable cost. These alert the users whenever an item is about to leave the security gate without proper authorization. These systems require three components – tags, security/detector gates, and detachers.

There are two types of detachers available in the market, electronic and manual. Both have their benefits and cons.
