Property management is a complex task and your tenants count on you. Also they want a quick and easy entry process. RFID door lock access control system help you in fulfilling those needs.

Here, we will explain what an RFID door lock is and its working; pros and cons and offer alternative access control solutions.

RFID Door Lock

It is a type of electronic lock that is accessed through credentials such as key fobs or key cards powered by RFID technology.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology uses electromagnetic fields for communication between tags and readers. Industries such as logistics companies use RFID technology to monitor the progress of cars and air planes, and even farmers use RFID tags to categorise and identify their cattle.

For RFID door lock installation there are a few different configurations. Some door locks work with existing deadbolts, so metal keys can be used with RFID credentials. Other RFID locks only work with electronic credentials.

RFID locks can be installed on unit doors or other that lead into gyms or co-working rooms on a residential property. It is also beneficial for commercial properties. A business can issue key cards to employees to gain access within the building.

RFID door locks needs 3 components

•   RFID tag: It is a tiny device that stores unique, computerised data. This data verifies a resident’s identity.

•   Credential reader: It receive data from a credential and send it to a control panel. It has an antenna, which allows communication with the tag.

•   Control panel: It is the brain of the RFID door lock system. It stores a database of credential information, and decides whether credential matches or not. You can also update access permissions and modify the database.

How RFID door locks work

It works by using radio waves and establish a connection between credential and reader. When credential is presented to the lock, the reader determines whether they have permission or not.

RFID door lock access control system requires administrators to program and assign a unique credential to each tenant.

It is a type of wireless and electronic access control device that is similar to smart locks and the difference is that smart locks operate via an internet and/or Bluetooth connection, and unlocking can be done with a smartphone. RFID locks operate via radio waves and physical device, like a plastic fob or key card.

Using an RFID door lock

•   Credentials are shown to the reader. You might require physically placing key or fob onto the reader. Other systems read credentials from a distance, making them valid for touch less entry.

•   The credentials send a string of data to the reader with radio waves.

•   Control panel verifies credentials; compares the data to an internal database. When it matches, the control panel instructs the door to open.

•   The control panel sends an electric current to the lock and unlocks the door.

RFID Door Lock Pros & Cons

RFID door lock access control system use technology to simplify access. But do these benefits outweigh its disadvantages? And is it useful for property managers and staff?

RFID Lock for Door Pros:

•   Easy to replace credentials: You will require to issue streams of new keys or fobs as new tenants always come or existing ones lose them. You can simply print out a new key card to use onsite equipment.

•   Convenience for tenants: It is much easier than the keys. RFID readers can read a tag without touching; health-conscious residents will also appreciate the benefits.

•   Simple to administer: It can work with multiple doors within a building. You do this by programming one key for multiple rooms.

RFID Door Lock Cons:

•   Credentials are easily lost: Tenants frequently lose their RFID credentials. The chances of losing card are quite high. And then, residents have to take time out to replace the fob. This means that convenience benefits aren’t as significant as they might seem.

•   Credentials are insecure: RFID credentials are easier than traditional keys. However, anyone can order their own RFID copying machine— increasing the potential for security breaches.

•   No way to manage visitor entry: RFID door lock doesn’t give residents to verify a guest’s identity or grant an entry. With internet-powered smart locks users can send digital access codes and virtual keys to trusted guests.
